December Featured Install

Check out our December Featured Install! This basement floor was installed by Doug Johns with Expert Epoxy Solutions in Hampstead, NC.

For this 2,000 sq ft basement floor, the customer wanted to cover up an existing concrete overlay that was 30 years old, so it was uneven and had a lot of cracks. The home is also on the water and in a region with a lot of moisture. Doug knew it was important to not only provide a floor coating that was aesthetically pleasing but also one that would coat the floor with a good moisture-blocking coating that would wick deep into concrete floors to mitigate moisture vapor emissions (MVE) as well as increase the adhesion of subsequently applied systems.

This large installation presented an additional challenge. Doug and his team weren’t able to bring in any big equipment such as a grinder to prepare the floor, so they used rotary floor machines with wire brushes. To further prep the floor, they used Versatile’s Crack Weld and 4920 Polyurea Expansion Joint Filler to fill in the numerous cracks and joints in the floor.

They started the floor coating process by using a thick coat of our 4100 Clear Moisture-Blocking Epoxy to get a good build to remove the texture from the existing floor while providing a great moisture barrier. Next, they used 4195 Direct-to-Concrete Pigmented Epoxy in Whisper Grey with both 1/4-inch and 1-inch Basalt Brindle Flake for the gray color variations. The floor was then topped with the 5085 Slow-Drying Polyaspartic for added strength and durability. These coatings make the floor stain- and scratch-resistant, as well as chip and peel-resistant, so the homeowners can enjoy it for years to come.

Congratulations to Expert Epoxy Solutions on this amazing basement floor installation!
